Source own work, based on drawing in Bridie, M.F., The Story of Shute, Axminster, 1955, p.24/5, and text pp.21-33; traced for true scale from photograph on p.18/19; Re absence of top-floor windows, as were included in Bridie's sketch, her text states her opinion pp.24-5 "It is evident that the front door was flanked by what were tall handsome gothic windows some 12ft in height one on either side, two coupled trefoil-headed windows evidently later lighted the upper part of the hall", and p.27: "the 4 doors and 4 windows...may be regarded as belonging wholly to the original design" (i.e. 2 * 12ft windows on each of E & W facades); p.32: "The chamber (i.e. gallery extending over part only of hall) would be adequately warmed from the great fireplace below and efficiently lighted by the tall windows". The upper windows were added only when a full ceiling with upper floor was later extended over the hall and its 4 windows.
