Description

Patrick Webb, Punchinello Works Out: Shiva (oil on canvas, 46" x 22", 1999). The image illustrates an earlier period and body of work in Patrick Webb's in the late 1990s: his two cycles of "Punchinello" paintings, which explored corporeality, vulnerability, and the world of the body as an allegory for his own revitalization and the discovery that he was not dying from HIV. They included the "Punchinello Goes West" series (1996) and the pictured series, "Punchinello Works Out" series (1997–2001), which explored mortality, age and desire through the character's struggles and experiences as a frail figure working out alongside buff men in a subterranean New York gym. The images of compressed spaces fragmented by mirrors and machines took Webb's work in a flatter, more abstract direction highlighting the sense of structure and pattern that had always underlaid his painting. This body of work has been publicly exhibited in prominent museums and venues, discussed widely in national art and daily press publications, and collected by major art institutions.

Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating an earlier period and body of work in Patrick Webb's career in the late 1990s: his two cycles of "Punchinello" paintings, which explored corporeality, vulnerability, and the world of the body as an allegory for his own revitalization and the discovery that he was not dying from HIV. They included the "Punchinello Goes West" series (1996), comprising 18 sequential paintings portraying a journey into American myth through various adventures in the open landscape and West, and the "Punchinello Works Out" series (1997–2001), which explored mortality, age and desire through the character's struggles and experiences working out in New York gyms. Because the article is about an artist and his work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize this key evolution in his art, which brought ongoing recognition from art journals, daily press publications, and art institutions. Webb's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Patrick Webb, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.
