DescriptionPeru - Cusco Sacred Valley & Incan Ruins 153 - steep-sided Urubama valley (6997273576).jpg
The Urubamba valley was a gorgeous place to spend a weekend. Hiking up the steep hillside afforded some great views.
What I love are the pockets of fields and terraces high, high up the mountainsides hundreds of meters above the valley floor. Amazing they can be constructed and continued to farm.
Also obvious though is that far more of the slopes were farmed in Incan times than are cultivated today, much of the original terracing and water management no longer functioning. It is sad to see the area less developed in many ways than hundreds of years ago.
