Like her father, she was well known in Washington D C. for her wealth and generosity, but also a subject of gossip and scandal. She was a "bold soul", a registered midwife, who owned an operated a hotel and saloon. She married an Italian immigrant and lived openly when interracial marriages were illegal in many states.
