(c) The so-called Alexandrine line of six iambic feet is occasionallyadmitted, especially to wind up impressively a poetical paragraph. Thename is seemingly derived from its use in old French epics on Alexan-der. Pope ridicules and exemplifies it thus in the Essay on Criticism: — A needless Alexandrine ends the songThat, like a wounded snake, drags its slow length along.
