Description

Ball-and-stick model of the cubane tetramer that potassium tert-butoxide (tBuOK) adopts in the solid state, in solution and even in the gas phase. While a single formula unit of tBuOK has the chemical formula C4H9KO, the tetramer has the formula C16H36K4O4.

Colour code:

Carbon, C: grey-black
Hydrogen, H: white
Oxygen, O: red
Potassium, K: purple

Structure determined by X-ray crystallography and reported in Polyhedron (1991) 10, 337–345 (SOGKOO). The tert-butyl groups are disordered, but only one of the two conformations per group is displayed, for simplicity and clarity.

Model manipulated in CrystalMaker 8.7.
