English: The minimum mass of Proxima Centauri b is 1.27 Earth masses, corresponding to an edge-on orbit, but the orbital inclination of the planet has not been measured. The range of possible inclinations follows a probability distribution (e.g., the median inclination is 60 degrees - not 45!). If the inclination is lower than 90 degrees (edge-on), a higher mass follows. This figure shows the relation between possible masses for the exoplanet, and the probability for the corresponding inclination. Input: binary mass function, stellar mass, and trigonometry to relate inclination to probability. |
