Summary

Description
English: Quarry, Lady Down These bushes near the top of Lady Down mark the edge of a heavily overgrown and inaccessible disused shallow circular quarry or pit which is shown on the OS 1:25,000 map as Pit (dis). The stone extracted from the quarry was limestone from the Middle Purbeck beds of the Jurassic period, and the quarry was last used around 1900 to extract stone for tiles. Aerial photographs from 1946 show a number of other small quarry pits on Lady Down over an area of 11 hectares which are marked as a Roman stoneworking site on the OS map of Roman Britain.
