Description
English: Quartered arms of Richard Cole (d.1614) of Bucks in the parish of Woolfardisworthy in Devon. Shield hanging by guige strap, from a branch of the family tree. Quarterly of 6:
  • 1&6: Cole Argent, a bull passant sable armed or a bordure of the second bezantée
  • 2:
  • 3:
  • 4: Walcot of Walcot, Lydbury, Shropshire: Argent, on a cross patoncée sable five fleurs-de-lis or (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.1063, with cross flory). The story of these arms is related by Burke thus: "(John Walcote) playing at chess with Henry V King of England, he gave him the check mate with the rook, whereupon the king changed his coat of arms, which was the cross with fleurs-de-lis, and gave him the rook for a remembrance". The thus augmented arms became: Argent, a chevron between three chess-rooks ermine.
