Summary

Description

Anyone visiting the college for 2015's "George Boole 200" events may be interested to know that this observatory is accessible to visitors for the first time since opening in the 19th century. It certainly looks shiny and new in this French shot, but could we refine the date/range of when it was taken?

The consensus seems to be that this photo was taken soon after the building was opened in 1880.

From a history of the observatory it seems that whereas it is not famous for any particular discovery, it still holds an important place in that world: The significance of the Crawford Observatory lies largely in the quality of its instruments, rather than in the findings made by astronomers using the instruments. The Siderostatic Telescope, for example, is the ancestor of that used today in Kitt Peak in Arizona and the work done there is still relevant over a hundred years later. from: www.astronomytrail.ie/crawford/history/
