Location of the event depicted
The intention of the Queen's commander was to capture vessels reported at Gordon's landing on Red river. This was the same location as "Fort DeRussy" [1]. The fort's earthworks are still existing and is located about 4 miles north of Marksville. On the 14th, the Queen successfully captured steamer Era 15 miles upstream from the entrance to the Black river. The ship was grounded within site of the guns at Gordon's Landing, at a sharp bend just before them. [2]. Col. Ellet alleged the grounding was done purposely by the replacement pilot who he accused in his report of being a rebel sympathizer. Source: Charles R. Ellet Frank Moore , ed.
