Description

Rene Thury's six pole dynamo for which he was awarded a patent in 1883. Original caption: "Thury's Dynamo". Original Public Domain text accompanying the image:

Thury's dynamo - A very similar machine, having a drum armature being built along a hollow core of laminated iron, was designed by Thury. Fig. 159 shows a six pole machine based on this principle. The field magnets, with slab cores are bolted together in a strong hexagonal shape with six inward facing pole pieces of alternate polarity. The windings on the drum must embrace chords of 60 degrees, and six brushes must be used unless the armature or collector bars are respectively cross connected at 120 degrees all around. Machines of this type are made from 1300 kilogrammes weight giving 22,000 watts at 600 revolutions per minute, to 4500 kilogrammes, giving 66,000 watts at 350 revolutions per minute.
