Description
English: Riccarton Junction southbound platform
Riccarton Junction was a railway village and station on the former North British Railway Edinburgh to Carlisle Line known as the Waverley Route. The Border Counties Railway, originating in Hexam, Northumberland, joined the Waverley Route to the south of the station in this remote and isolated area in Roxburghshire. The Border Counties Line was closed to passenger traffic in 1956 and to freight in 1958, and by the time the Waverley Route was closed in 1969 many of the buildings on the site had been demolished. A voluntary organisation, Friends of Riccarton Junction, was constituted in 1997 with the aim of restoring as much as possible of the station. In 2004 major restoration of the southbound platform was undertaken including laying a track alongside the platform and replacing the former red telephone kiosk that once stood on the platform.
