Summary[edit]

Non-free media data
Description

The cover to the first hardcover edition of Louis Riel by Chester Brown, published by Drawn & Quarterly in 2003

Source
Portion used

The entire front cover. Because the image is a book cover, a form of product packaging, the entire image is needed to identify the product, properly convey the meaning and branding intended, and avoid tarnishing or misrepresenting the image.

Low resolution?

The copy is of sufficient resolution for commentary and identification but lower resolution than the original book cover. Copies made from it will be of inferior quality, unsuitable as artwork on pirate versions or other uses that would compete with the commercial purpose of the original artwork.

Other information

This image is from the Amazon link for the hardcover version of Chester Brown's book, Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography. The image is only meant as an illustration of the cover of the book. Copyright of the image belongs to Chester Brown, the author of the book.

Non-free media rationale for Louis Riel (comics)
Article

Louis Riel (comics)

Purpose of use

To illustrate the main infobox of the Louis Riel (comics) article. The image is used for identification in the context of critical commentary of the work of comics for which it serves as cover art. As it is a work of comics, it makes a significant contribution to the user's understanding of the article, which could not practically be conveyed by words alone. The image is placed in the infobox at the top of the article discussing the work, to show the primary visual image associated with the work, and to help the user quickly identify the work and know they have found what they are looking for. It also illustrates the style of artwork found within the book. Use for this purpose does not compete with the purposes of the original work, namely the book cover creator's ability to provide book cover design services and in turn marketing books to the public.

Replaceable?

Copyrighted comic and artwork; by nature, no freely-licensed alternative exists. As a book cover, the image is not replaceable by free content; any other image that shows the packaging of the book would also be copyrighted, and any version that is not true to the original would be inadequate for identification or commentary. Using a different image in the infobox would be misleading as to the identity of the work.

Non-free media rationale for Canadian comics
Article

Canadian comics

Purpose of use
  1. To illustrate the New wave (mid-1970s–1980s) section of the Canadian comics article
  2. Bestselling graphic novel; considered a landmark in Brown's career, taking him out of the underground into mainstream acceptance
  3. As the first work in comics to receive a Canada Council grant, it symbolizes the greater acceptance comics were having as art at the turn of the 20th to 21st Centuries
  4. Subject matter is particularly Canadian, focusing on the life of Louis Riel, thus particularly relevant to an article on the history of comics in Canada
Replaceable?

Copyrighted comic and artwork; by nature, no freely-licensed alternative exists.
