Description

We headed towards the cliff car park, but it was too windy and cold.

Never the less I got out the car to take photos of these old buildings.

Area is called St Edmund's Point.

Found this old ruin at St Edmund's Point. It was St Edmund's Chapel.

The chapel was built in 1272 as it was believed that this was the site that Edmund the King of East Anglia landed on in 855 AD, after crossing the North Sea from Germany.

It was used as a place of worship for aroun 400 years before falling into neglect.

The area is now a Garden of Rest, which was created in 1918 by the Reverend A.A. Toms in memory of the local men who fell in the First World War.

It is Grade II listed.

Ruined church. Medieval. Flint with some dressings. Footings of aisleless nave and chancel, mostly rebuilt in early C20. At south west corner a battered buttress, clunch and chalk lump with stone dressings. Wall with inserted early C20 brick and tiled round headed arch. Site associated in Middle Ages with landing place of King Edmund of East Anglia, later martyred by the Danes.

Also traditionally the northern end of the Peddar's Way.
