Designed and built in the USA as the T48 Gun Motor Carriage, the SU-57 was effectively an M3 Half-Track mounting the 57mm M1 gun, which itself was a license built British QF 6 pounder. The entire production of the type was intended for British use in the Western Desert, however this campaign had ended by the time they were delivered and therefore 650 of them found themselves on the way to the Soviet Union as part of the Soviet Aid Program. The Soviets used them across the Eastern Front and particularly during Operation Bagration, the 1944 Soviet Belorussian Strategic Offensive Operation.
On display in ‘Victory Park’, Museum of the Great Patriotic War, Poklonnaya Hill, Moscow, Russia.
