Description

Cover image of The Shaw Alphabet Edition of Androcles and the Lion, by George Bernard Shaw, 1962 Penguin Books paperback. Cover design by Germano Facetti shows an excerpt including the title: ยท๐‘จ๐‘ฏ๐‘›๐‘ฎ๐‘ฉ๐‘’๐‘ค๐‘ฐ๐‘Ÿ ๐‘ฏ ๐‘ž ๐‘ค๐‘ฒ๐‘ฉ๐‘ฏ.

Shavian alphabet

Portion used

Front cover of the book.

Low resolution?

It has an intrusive price sticker on the cover. That can't possibly help with counterfeiting.

Purpose of use

To illustrate the article on the Shavian alphabet, which is depicted as part of Germano Facetti's cover design, and furthermore incorporates a picture of the play's author George Bernard Shaw, who requested in his will that Androcles and the Lion be the first book printed in the alphabet named after him.

Replaceable?

Only this one book was ever printed in the Shaw alphabet. It has never been reprinted since its low original print run and the alphabet has for the most part remained unused since. While the Shaw alphabet is now a part of Unicode and there are free fonts available, a simple sample text would not have the same historical and educational value, nor the significance, as the cover of this book.

Androcles and the Lion (play)

Front cover of the book.

Purpose of use

To illustrate the article on the play Androcles and the Lion, whose author George Bernard Shaw requested in his will that the play be the first book printed in the Shavian alphabet named after him. The title of the play is included, using the Shavian alphabet, in Germano Facetti's cover design, as is a portrait of the author.

Replaceable?

Only this one book was ever printed in the Shavian alphabet. It has never been reprinted since its low original print run and the alphabet has for the most part remained unused since. This makes the cover image itself โ€” and particularly its use of the Shavian alphabet โ€” to be significant in and of itself.
