Summary

Description
English: The Shonkin Sag near en:Highwood, Montana, in September 1920. The Sag is a former river channel near the north base of the en:Highwood Mountains. It was eroded by the en:Missouri River when the river was diverted by the Keewatin ice sheet during the en:last ice age. The channel also served for water released by the en:glacial lake outburst flood created by en:Glacial Lake Great Falls. At the point depicted here, the Sag is 200 to 300 feet (61 to 91.5 meters) deep. The buildings in the picture are grain elevators and worker housing belonging to the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul Railway, which traversed the Sag.
