Description
English: Contemporary illustration of a siren from the Ballet comique de la reine of 1581. The sirens escorted a chariot, designed like a fountain, containing Queen Louise, her ladies, and musicians. The narrative of the ballet, one of the "magnificences" of the age of Catherine de' Medici, mother of Henri III of France, was based on the myth of Circe, who turned men into beasts. This was held to symbolise the state of civil war in France at the time.
