English: St. Patrick’s church is located west of Garryowen (sometimes referred to as “North Garryowen”) on W. Bellevue-Cascade Road (D61), Jackson County, Iowa. Originally the settlement was named Makokiti, later changed to Garryowen after Garraí Eoin, a neighborhood in Limerick, Ireland, due to the large number of Irish Catholics who settled in the area. Construction of the stone church began in Oct. 1853 and was completed in 1854. The stone was quarried 3 miles south of Garryowen and was hauled by oxen. The lime was locally kilned. The architect was Mr. J. Boland.
