Summary

Description Interior of Church of St Paul, Mirfield, West Yorkshire, designed by William Swinden Barber in 1881. Showing empty floor of belfry where until recently were 6 Victorian bronze bells, now in Charleston, South Carolina. Note: A bell frame sits on the belfry floor - it is not fixed to the tower walls because it must be braced vertically to take the weight. The massive weight of 6 bells assists the floor joists to stabilise the tower by compression and by pulling inwards. Removal of the 6 bells for which the tower has been designed, can be to the structural disadvantage of the tower in future years. There is no public access to the tower.
