The map shows the route (red) of the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoaches from Rancho Los Encinos (or Rancho El Encino) to the pass over the Simi Hills (left) in what is now Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park. The Santa Susana Mountains (left top) and its tributaries to the Los Angeles River are also shown.
