Summary

Description
English: Stokes drift in a one-dimensional compressible flow, with the red line the exact solution and the blue line the 2nd-order perturbation-series solution.

The Stokes drift is the solution of the partial differential equation:

with the Eulerian flow velocity as a function of position and time Further is the wavenumber and is the angular frequency.

The animation shows the evolution in time of as a function of position label In the presented case the values of the parameters are: and
The red dots show Lagrangian drifter positions for equidistant labels evolving with time.
The example is analogue to the one described in: G. Falkovich (2011). Fluid Mechanics (A short course for physicists). Cambridge University Press. ISBN 978-1-107-00575-4, pp. 71–72.
