Summary
| Description |
The Temple Emanuel on the Wilhelminaplein in Punda dates back to 1864, when a group of Reform Jews broke away from the older Mikve Israel congregation (the oldest in the New World). The congregations reunited in 1964, moving services back to the original Mikve Israel synagogue. The Temple Emanuel was eventually sold to the Netherlands Antilles government in 1989. The Jewish community in Curaçao dates back to 1651, when Sephardic Jews from Portugal settled in Punda and established the Congregation Mikve Israel. By the late eighteenth century, Jews made up approximately half of white settlers on the island. After decades of emigration, however, only about 500 Jews remain on the island. The community has been especially hard hit by young people going to the Netherlands or United States for college and never coming back. |
