Summary

Description
English: The Beck Hole Incline in Goathland George Stephenson's original 1836 Whitby to Pickering railway included a steep inclined plane from Beck Hole to Goathland. Carriages were hauled up by a funicular system using hemp rope and counterbalanced water-filled tanks. A stationary steam engine was installed in 1847. After several accidents the incline was replaced by the present 'Deviation' line in July 1865.
