Inscriptions Signed and dated in pen and brown ink verso P. Mariette, 1664 – signature of Pierre Mariette II (1634-1716) (Lugt 1788); inscribed in brown ink on verso by Joseph Gulston (1745-1786) “N20756” and “£ 3”13”6” and presumably also inscribed by him: “Scraped by Prince Rupert”; in blue ink on verso the stamp of an anonymous, probably 19th c., collector (L.352a); Marquess of Bute, according to Albert Blum’s notes; the information may have come to him via Colnaghi; inscribed with the stock number “C.28114(?)” of Colnaghi’s, London; stamp in purple ink verso with the date 1951 indicating Albert W. Blum (1882-1952), Switzerland and Short Hills, NJ (L. 79b) acquired the piece in 1951; listed in the Christie’s auction catalogue as property of a private European collection
