Summary

Description
English: In the 18th Century anyone in England under the age of 21 needed parental consent before they could get married. As that was not the case in Scotland, many eloping couples whose parents did not approve of the proposed marriage would cross the border in secret to marry at the nearest convenient place in Scotland. Gretna Green is probably the most famous of these venues, but as the Toll House at Coldstream is the first building on the Scottish side of the Tweed Bridge, and therefore the first place that they would reach in Scotland, it was a very convenient stopping-place and hosted hundreds of weddings, eventually becoming known as The Old Marriage House
