Nederlands: Shogun is de titel van de persoon die de hoogste militaire macht in Japan bezit. Het is afgeleid van de titel Sei-i-taishogun, wat ‘de generaal die de barbaren verslaat’ betekent. De oorspronkelijke shoguns hebben de taak opstandige volkeren in Noord-Japan te bestrijden. Later wordt het begrip shogun gebruikt om de leidende figuur van de militaire regeringen die Japan eeuwenlang besturen, te duiden. Deze staatsvorm wordt in het Japans bakufu genoemd, wat vertaald wordt als shogunaat. Na een korte burgeroorlog trekt de laatste shogun zich terug in 1868, wat het einde van het shogunaat betekent. English: Shogun was the title of the person who wielded the greatest military power in Japan. It was derived from the title Sei-i-taishogun, which means ‘the general who defeats the barbarians’. Originally, the Shoguns’ duty was to fight rebellious people in the north of Japan. Later, the name shogun was used to designate the leading figure in the military governments that ran Japan for centuries. In Japanese, this form of government was called ‘bakufu’ or shogunate. After a short war, the last of the Shoguns stood down in 1868 and this marked the end of the shogunate. |
