His reputation is founded on his management ofthe Newark & South Orange Railway of which he prac-tically took charge when 16 years old. Under the Greig system of light railways the cost is$5,000 a mile outside of England, while in the lattercountry the cost is increased to $7,500 to $10,000 a mile,on account of preliminary Parliamentary expenses andincreased cost of right of way. In South Africa, India,Australia, China, the Straits Settlements, West Indies,Sandwich Islands and other places, the gage is 2 feet to2 feet 6 inches, the locomotives weighing 7 or 8 tons andcan carry safely a load of 80 tons or so at a speed of 10miles an hour. A light railway of still narrower gage toconnect farms with a main line of light railway can bebuilt for $1,000 a mile and might prove of great benefitto farmers if there was plenty of produce to be carried.The illustrations show Greig & Beadons patent lightrailway locomotive, Greigs patent light railway and roll-ing stock and a 2-foot gage line at Ackworth colliery,Northumberland.
