The commander of the Rebel brigade opposing our linehad been captured by General Kilpatricks scouts the day beforewhen incautiously reconnoitring in front of his command. Heproved to be Colonel Alfred Rhett, of a South Carolina regimentof heavy artillery, and was much distressed at his mishap. He toldGeneral Sherman that his command had been in the defences ofCharleston and had never been in a field engagement, but he thoughtthe men would fight.
