Summary
DescriptionUS-$5-SC-1899-Fr.271 (cropped).jpg |
English: $5 Silver Certificate, Series of 1899 (Fr. Ref#271), depicting Running Antelope of the Sioux. Engraved signatures of Lyons (Register of the Treasury) and Roberts, (Treasurer of the United States). Running Antelope was a Chief of the Hunkpapa, part of the Lakota Sioux. George F.C. Smillie’s engraved rendering (based on this photograph) caused significant controversy as Running Antelope, a Sioux, was depicted wearing Pawnee headdress. |
