Summary[edit]

This illustration shows an underground nuclear explosion: 1) the initial fireball, with extreme heat and pressure, 2) the shock wave expanding, 3) gas in the cavity begins to cool and solidify into a puddle, the 'chimney' of rubble can be seen above the cavity, 4) pressure falls in the cavity, and can no longer support the chimney, which collapses, forming a subsidence crater at the surface.

The image was drawn by User:Jakew, using some components from Image:Types of nuclear testing.svg and Image:Explosion and implosion.svg, and therefore is licensed under the same terms.
