g house, the costof living at the Lhiiversity dormitories is usually somewhat less.The general mingling of the students incident to dormitory lifeand fostered by the Houston Club and the Ciymnasium hasgreatly strengthened the fellowship of the students, so thatPennsylvania may claim to be one of the most democratic aswell as one of the most cosmopolitan of universities. In ath-letics, also, the regulations adopted by the l)ei)artment of Physi-cal Education have brought about . the desired fraternal con-ditions, i he students who show exceptional ability, and whomake Varsity teams, are no longer the only ones who use the 29 Gymnasium, the athletic fields and boat-houses, but all studentsare now obliged to take some form of physical exercise. Eachstudent, upon matriculating, is examined by the Director ofPhysical Education, who is also Professor of Physical Educa-tion, and who prescribes the amount and character of exercisenecessary to keep the student in health while at the University,
