This is a Via Rail Canada passenger train in Gascons, Quebec, Canada in July 1989. It is headed by a General Motors Electro-Motive Division F40PH-2 diesel locomotive, a model that was used to haul passenger trains in both Canada and America. The engine was built in April 1989 and used as Via Rail # 6430. When this photo was taken, the unit was only 3 months old. The engine got wrecked in November 1999 in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. The unit was retired in January 2001 and scrapped.
The railroad cut shown on the right side of the photo has an exposure of the La Vieille Formation, a Middle Silurian unit of interbedded fossiliferous limestones and shales with a marine fauna dominated by brachiopods and corals.
