Description
The full description of the painting is: Stue. (A room. The corner of a room with walls painted grey-lilac, divided into panels. At the back a white door, and on the right wall another one. Between the two, in the corner, a masonry heater with a long pipe. At the front a gambling table, where a woman is sitting, sewing.). The description is from Michaelis and Bramsen's list of paintings by Hammershøi. They gave it number 173, indicating that it was painted in 1897. The contemporary expert Poul Vad dismissed this, as the interior is from Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen, where the Hammerhøi family lived from September 1898 to 1909. So the date of the painting would be in that period.
