Summary

Description
English: Walter Scott's Charity School, Old Gloucester Road Opened 5th January 1799 and paid for from the proceeds of Walter Scott's will. (No relation to the historical novelist.) Teaching ceased on 30th March 1928. A planning notice on the gate proposes a change of use of 'The Old Georgian Rooms (Walter Scott Charity School) to offices. Walter Scott was born in Ross-on-Wye in 1716 and ran away to London at the age of 13. He did not visit the town again until he was 69 years old. He died a year later, having left instructions in his will for the re-establishment of the Blue Coat Charity School. He is buried in the churchyard of St. Mary’s.
