Summary

Description
English: Common metrics used to monitor water clarity. General metrics presented here include Secchi depth (ZSD), light attenuation of photosynthetically active radiation (Kd(PAR); referred to in this paper as Kd), turbidity, and beam attenuation. Metrics identified with specific components of the water column include colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), total suspended solids concentration (TSS) (also known as suspended particulate matter, or SPM), and chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a). Some symbols are adapted from IAN UMCES media library. This diagram is Figure 1 in the publication "Clarifying water clarity: A call to use metrics best suited to corresponding research and management goals in aquatic ecosystems" published in the journal Limnology and Oceanography Letters in January 2022, accessible at: https://doi.org/10.1002/lol2.10301

This image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.

It is recommended to name the SVG file “Water clarity metrics figure Turner 2022 Limnology and Oceanography Letters.svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.
