  • Can you explain to me the purpose of the Sign Extend unit. and for which instructions is it used?
Since the ALU takes two 32-bit values, the immediate value must be extended from 16 bits to 32 bits. This is done by extending the sign bit (MSB) to the rest of the upper 16 bits.--Moranlf (talk) 16:51, 13 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Needs correction[edit]

The MIPS pipeline image seen here has a point of correction. The Register File has RS1 & RS2 as well as the destination instruction coming into the RF.
