Since this is the English Wikipedia, the following are equivalent. Precede with a colon to avoid transclusion of the image:

The actual image itself (as opposed to the "File:" container that holds it) is stored (or can be dynamically resized?) in different sizes at different URLs, for example:

I think the way it works is this. The software uses the actual image stored on commons, if it exists. If not, it uses the local (English Wikipedia) image. If that doesn't exist either, then it allows an editor to upload an image, as at File:Mary Wollstonecraft, by John Opie (circa 1797).jpg. I don't know if different actual images with the same name are allowed to exist on both Commons and English Wikipedia at the same time, and if so, which takes priority when called up using "File:" syntax. Different "File:" containers are allowed to exist at the same time. In general, I believe that the local English "File:" container is intended to supplement the contents of the Commons container. – Wbm1058 (talk) 16:00, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I see. Category:Wikipedia files that shadow a file on Wikimedia Commons identifies 189 shadow files. For example,

- Commons:Media:Nikon Coolpix 995.jpg (this appears to redirect to Commons:File:Nikon Coolpix 995.jpg)

The file is under one name and file talk page is under another name. This needs to be moved to match the name of the file, but this needs to be done by an administrator because there's a redirect under the other name. The file doesn't meet any of the file renaming criteria on Commons (nor any of the file renaming criteria on Wikipedia), so the file itself can't and shouldn't be moved. --Stefan2 (talk) 14:15, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
