Which Otto Goldschmidt

[edit]

It should probably not be assumed that the Otto Goldschmidt this image portrays is the Otto Goldschmidt who married Jenny Lind, although the date (c. 1851/2) would fit Lind's husband. However, note how this Southworth & Hawes image differs from published images of Lind's husband. The man in the Southworth & Hawes picture has a bulbous nose, is clean shaven apart from a moustache, has a double chin, and has luxuriant wavy hair; protraits of Lind's Goldschmidt, young and old, show a man with an aquiline nose, side-whiskers and no double chin; and, perhaps most conclusively, in a portrait with Lind c. 1850, her Goldschmidt can be seen with a receding hair-line, which the man in the present image dated 1851/2 did not suffer from.
