Why we don't need this diagram, and do need another[edit]

   Well, the edit page for this previously non-existent talk page displayed approximately the following text:

Wikipedia does not have a talk page with this exact title. Note that the corresponding subject page File:Punctuated-equilibrium.svg also does not exist.
  • To start a page called File talk:Punctuated-equilibrium.svg, type in the box below. When you are done, preview the page to check for errors and then save it.
This is a talk page. Please respect the talk page guidelines, and remember to sign your posts by typing four tildes (~~~~).
There are many things this page is NOT for:

  • Test edits (please go to Wikipedia:Sandbox)
  • General comments on the image or its subject, e.g. "aww, how cute" (Wikipedia is not a forum); or questions about the subject which have nothing to do with the image, e.g. "how is the team doing this year?" (go to the Reference Desk)
  • Contacting the photographer or uploader (use the relevant user talk page)
  • Requesting corrections to the image (try the talk page of an article that the image is used in, or contact the graphics lab.)
  • Requesting deletion of the image (check speedy deletion criteria to see if there is a suitable tag to place on the File: page; or failing that go to Files for Deletion).
  • Asking about the copyright status of the image; the media copyright questions desk and possibly unfree files page are more widely-viewed locations.

  1. That text is mistaken at least to the extent that
    File:Punctuated-equilibrium.svg ([1]) does in fact exist;
    also, the server knows enuf to display the link, as a blue link, in the msg claiming the page doesn't exist.
  2. It neglects to say what such talk pages are for (when their accompanying File pages do exist).
  3. I know talk pages in general exist for discussion of issues re development of the accompanying non-talk pages.
  4. The matter seems likely to be equally relevant to all articles using the image, not to just a subset of them.

So i'd feel pretty stupid if i blindly followed the instructions -- "try [instead] the talk page of an article that the image is used in ..." (i should guess which article using it is most likely to attract editors who are interested and informed? Or start discussions in a handful of places?), "... or contact the graphics lab" (tho i am the wrong person to justify, to graphics mavens, perceptions of needed changes based on my non-specialist's grasp -- no matter how however careful -- of the evolutionary subject matter) -- to post elsewhere.
   On the other hand, i am limiting what i put here to noting the diagram's content presents issues, lest discussion get rolling here, and the talk page then be deleted; i'll encourage further discussion within a new supersection of the existing Talk:Punctuated equilibrium#Picture. Others may choose to add links to there, on talk pages of other articles that use the image.
