Perhaps the creators of the portal used this image just because it looks simple and naive. Space flight is a topic full of complicated and dry matter such as escape velocities, semimajor axes, data transmitting systems and nuclear propulsion devises. Perhaps a lot of people are in need for an icon that makes them smile. I don't suppose it's notable that the Galactic Empire of the famous Foundation series by Isaac Asimov is described as having a "spaceship and sun" insignia?
