4K UHD source[edit]

@David Fuchs I agree the original file is more pleasing, but I have to wonder if that's just not the saturation level playing tricks on us. When I was scaling it down in Photoshop, I tweaked the saturation and, if I'd wanted, could have gotten it close to or identical in general appearance to the file you uploaded initially, but then I'm engaging in WP:NOR. I suspect, if anything, the original transfer was "hot", and the 4K version is more accurate to the original theatrical run (one need only look at Blu-ray versions of The Undiscovered Country, where excessive digital noise reduction (DNR) was applied, giving the release a wax museum look in many scenes). I leave it to you to decide which is better, but figured I'd give the rationale for uploading anyways for future reference. I have reverted my source/info changes to your revision as well. —Locke Coletc 20:04, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Locke Cole The question of "how it looked" is definitely an issue, although I don't believe Generations and most of the TNG movies suffered from the excessive DNR or as many of the color timing issues with the HD, certainly compared to the TOS films. To me the main issue is really legibility: the old shot reads easier at lower resolutions. But if there's additional opinions on which is the better option, I'm open to starting a discussion somewhere more trafficked. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs talk 22:21, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
