The area was first settled by the Spanish in the mid Sixteenth Century. The town of Hilario Ascasubi was founded on 1 September 1912.[2] Rail service was brought to the town the following year. The important road bridge over the Ctalamochita River was completed in October 1923.[3][4]

In 2024 the town was inundated by parrots due to destruction of their habitat in the surrounding area.[5][6]
