After studying at the Lycée du Parc and Lumière University Lyon 2, where he was notably a student of Victor-Henry Debidour and Jean Pouilloux,[1] he became an agrégé in classical literature and entered the novitiate in 1976. Ordained a priest in 1984, he earned a doctorate in theology with a thesis on Origen, which he defended in 1988 under the direction of Bernard Sesboüé.[2]

A specialist in patristics,[3] he has been teaching at the Centre Sèvres since 1987, where he served as Dean of the Faculty of Theology (1996–2002) and later as President (2003–2009).[4]

He is a member of the editorial board of Recherches de science religieuse, the scientific council of the Association des Amis de Sources chrétiennes, and the scientific council for the authorized critical edition of The Works of Karl Rahner in French.[5]

Additionally, he is an important figure in ecumenical dialogue, notably as a member of the Groupe des Dombes.

In 2022, he was awarded the Ratzinger Prize,[6][7] and the following year, he received the Cardinal Grente Prize for his life's work.
