Yelyzaveta Dmytrieva (6 March 2018, Kyiv, Ukraine – 14 July 2022, Vinnytsia), a 4-year old Ukrainian girl, was killed by Russian forces during the Vinnytsia missile strikes. Her death was widely debated in media and commemorated in a song, video and a memorial.
Biography[edit]
Liza Dmytrieva was born on 6 March 2018 in Vinnytsia. Soon after her birth, her mother posted a photo on Instagram with the caption: "Meet this little angel, Liza".[1]
Liza was born with Down syndrome.[2] Despite knowing about the diagnosis before birth, the family decided to keep the child, wanting to "show Liza the world".[3] According to a speech therapist, despite her condition, Liza was intelligent and capable.[1] At six months, Liza successfully underwent major heart surgery.[2] Her mother, Iryna Dmytrieva, shared details about Liza's life and challenges on Instagram to help others with similar issues.[3]
Initially living with her parents in Kyiv, Liza moved to Vinnytsia with her mother due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In June 2019, Liza learned to sit independently, a significant milestone given her developmental challenges.[3] In winter 2021, she contracted coronavirus, which led to rheumatic arthritis. In 2021, Liza appeared in a Christmas video by Olena Zelenska.[4]
On 14 July 2022, while walking from a speech therapy session with her mother, Liza Dmytrieva was killed in a missile strike in Vinnytsia. Images of her bloodied stroller lying on its side next to her body circulated widely on the Internet.[5]
After the missile strike, Liza's mother was hospitalized with injuries and temporarily lost her memory.[6] Liza was buried on 17 July 2022 in the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral in Vinnytsia.[2] Her mother could not attend the funeral due to her condition.[2]
Legacy[edit]
- An improvised memorial was created at the site of Liza's death, where residents of Ukraine lay flowers and children's toys.[7]
- A video of Liza was shown on 20 July 2022 in the US Congress.[8]
- A song was written in memory of Liza by the band "Fire Hydrant".[9]
