Northwestern College (NC), formerly Northwestern Business College, was a private for-profit college in Oak Lawn, Illinois. The school offered a bachelor's degree program, associate degree programs, and certificate programs in online and on-campus settings. It had no affiliation with Northwestern University. The college closed in July 2024 after several years of financial challenges.[1]

Academics[edit]

The college offered certificate programs,[2] associate degree programs,[3] and a bachelor's degree program.[4]

Accreditation and approvals[edit]

Northwestern College was accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).[5] On July 2, 2024, HLC removed Northwester College from Probation and placed them "On Notice" because it was at risk of being out of compliance with the Criteria for Accreditation.[6]

The Health Information Technology Associate in Applied Science Degree[7] program and the Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management [8] programs were accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education. The Radiologic Technology Associate in Applied Science Degree [9] program was accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

Northwestern College was approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education. The Associate in Applied Science Degree program in Nursing was approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation, Illinois State Board of Nursing. When the college closed, this program was on probation due to low first-time pass rates of the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX).[10]

Financial challenges[edit]

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) placed Northwestern College on a Heightened Cash Monitoring (HCM) payment method many times to provide additional oversight of cash management. HCM provides additional oversight for institutions with a number of financial or federal compliance issues, some of which may be serious and others that may be less troublesome.[11]
