Cao

[edit]

Hung Cao is also a Naval Academy graduate and retired Navy Captain with service in Afghanistan, Somalia and Iraq. IMHO another instance of Wikipedia partiality. 108.18.229.113 (talk) 00:39, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

STOP REMOVING THE HUNG CAO LINK!

[edit]

You guys keep removing the link for no reason, it’s not a draft. It’s a legitimate page. So no reason to remove it. SmashingThreePlates (talk) 04:14, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hung Cao's profession

[edit]

Typically, when listing candidates for office, there will be a short description of each candidate's profession, to provide some context. As with all WP:BLP, the profession should be sourced, relevant, and provide the reader with important context. Hung Cao's profession has been widely reported on in numerous sources: He was a Naval officer who specialized in disarming explosives. He also has leveraged his professional expertise to found a nonprofit which makes Easter eggs which emit a sound, so visually impaired children can participate in Easter egg hunts. This nonprofit, Audible Eggs, appears to be a side project of his, seems too small to provide him with much work or income, and it doesn't seem like he ever mentions it while campaigning, yet this article lists "nonprofit founder" as his profession. His military service provides the reader with more important context (and even contextualizes his nonprofit work!); shouldn't this be how he's described in the article? I went with "former Navy Captain" in my first edit, but is there better phrasing that could be used? —BorgHunter (talk) 16:20, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • It's supposed to be the candidate's current job. Cao is not a Navy captain anymore. No other candidate has any of their previous jobs listed, so why should Cao get an exception? BottleOfChocolateMilk (talk) 18:44, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is it? He definitely founded it, but it's not even clear if they're still active. The website is pretty broken, it doesn't even have a working donation link. Near as I can tell, his current job is "running for Senate" with some freelance stuff on the side, and his previous job was "running for House", but "aspiring politician who hasn't won an election yet and probably won't this time either" doesn't look so good on a Wikipedia article. Practically every source I've come across describes his military service, but the few that even mention the nonprofit don't do so by name, it's the same nebulous "nonprofit founder" which I think ultimately came from his LinkedIn, and you have to do some digging to even find details on it. I'm leaning toward "nonprofit founder" in this context failing WP:V and WP:BLP. —BorgHunter (talk) 22:36, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's fair, I've changed the bio back to Navy captain (also I opted for "former" instead of "retired" for the sake of consistency). BottleOfChocolateMilk (talk) 00:58, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
