There is an impressive lack of really solid sources on this story. I've found the following which are all sort of sketchy, but many sketchy sources saying the same thing makes me think they may be more reliable than they look:

I have found a citation for the original magazine on what I assume is microform, so with the help of our lovely ILL folks I will soon have a confirmation for the original publican and maybe a nifty title page scan since it's public domain.
