MOS:ENDASH and consistency across all names. See similar, Category:5 ft 6 in gauge railways in India Vatsmaxed (talk) 08:07, 11 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Note: Please don't remove already done ones. I manually moved them over different days. Sorry for same. Wish to have a consensus for all above article moves. Also please group all above requests into single section, I am unable to do so. Vatsmaxed (talk) 08:07, 11 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

These are the "already done ones":

This is a contested technical request (permalink).  — Amakuru (talk) 10:49, 11 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - I agree in principle with these requests, as roads from Point A to Point B, our usual convention is to include the ENDASH. However, I have two peripheral questions, @Vatsmaxed: I'd be interested in your view on this:
    1. Should they all be ordered alphabetically, similar to Iran–United States relations and United States–Yemen relations? I think the only reason we'd order them non-alphabetically is if the road has a well-defined "start" versus "end" point, or if WP:COMMONNAME overwhelmingly favours the given direction.
    2. Should it be "Expressway" or "expressway"? Per MOS:CAPS only words which are "consistently capitalized in a substantial majority of independent, reliable sources" should be capitalised on Wikipedia, but I see plenty of sources which lowercase it: [1][2][3]  — Amakuru (talk) 10:58, 11 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Reply - @Amakuru: Please find my views below.
      1. No, they should not be ordered alphabetically. In India, the official name to expressway is given in format larger citysmaller city expressway. Due to media also using same format, it also enters in same way in general public talks. So WP:COMMONNAME favours the above given direction.
      2. It should be "expressway" as per MOS:CAPS. Now, many source also use uppercase ones:[4][5][6] But since there is no official case specification, we should go with MOS:CAPS. Thanks for pointing this out.
    • Having said this, there are many more expressway articles which need to be case-changed. (for eg. Belghoria Expressway). Please see such entries in subcategories in Category:Expressways in India. Ideally they should also be case-changed. Can this happen as part of this request, or a separate request needs to be raised? — Vatsmaxed (talk) 15:27, 11 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support even though I mildly prefer an em dash. Nom, or Amakuru, any idea why the community has preferred an en dash instead of an em dash in this case? --Doug Mehus T·C 18:09, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • The guidance is at MOS:ENBETWEEN. As for why it's that way, figuring that out requires going through lots of consensus-building discussions from 15 years ago in the talk archives. Dekimasuよ! 15:00, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Dekimasu, Thanks for the style guideline. I'll bookmark that and read it more in-depth. Sounds like a contentious discussion! Off-topic, and not relevant to this discussion, do you prefer en or em dashes? And how do you make an en dash (i.e., what's the Alt code)? I just use Alt+0151 (which is the em dash, if I'm understanding correctly). Doug Mehus T·C 16:53, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
